Calcium silicate insulation is one of the most widely specified high-temperature insulation materials in the world, and when engineers and procurement teams write a specification for it, the standard they reach for is almost always ASTM C533. But many buyers request "ASTM C533 compliant" material without fully understanding what the standard actually covers, what separates Type I from Type II, or how to confirm that a supplier's compliance claim is genuine. ## What ASTM C533 Actually Covers


ASTM C533 is the American Society for Testing and Materials standard specification for calcium silicate block and pipe thermal insulation. It defines the material composition, density limits, mechanical properties, dimensional tolerances, and thermal performance that a calcium silicate insulation product must meet to be considered compliant.


The standard applies to preformed calcium silicate block and pipe insulation made from hydrous calcium silicate, asbestos-free, intended for use on hot equipment, pipes, vessels, and ducts. It is the dominant North American reference standard for industrial high-temperature insulation and appears in EPC engineering documents, plant specifications, and procurement orders across the petrochemical, power generation, and chemical processing industries.


It is important to know what ASTM C533 does NOT cover: it does not apply to ceramic fiber insulation, mineral wool, perlite, or calcium silicate board products intended for structural or fire-protection use. Those are governed by separate standards such as ASTM E136 and ASTM E119.



## ASTM C533 Type I vs Type II: The Key Difference


The single most important distinction in ASTM C533 is the division into two types based on maximum continuous service temperature.


Type I is rated for a maximum service temperature of 650°F (343°C). It is intended for moderate-temperature pipe and equipment insulation. It typically has lower density and lower cost.


Type II is rated for a maximum service temperature of 1700°F (927°C). It is intended for high-temperature service on furnace components, hot oil systems, steam lines above 400°C, and kiln shells.


Both types share the same density limit and the same compressive and flexural strength minimums. The only difference is the service temperature ceiling. Most modern calcium silicate insulation manufactured today qualifies as Type II, and most HR RHINO grades comply with Type II while exceeding the spec on dimensional stability through 1000°C continuous service.



## The Density Limit Most Buyers Get Wrong


A common point of confusion: ASTM C533 caps the maximum density at 15 lb/ft³ (240 kg/m³) for both Type I and Type II. Higher-density calcium silicate materials such as 400, 500, 800, or 1200 kg/m³ grades are outside the scope of C533. Those high-density grades are intended for structural or fire-protection applications and are covered by other standards.


This matters during procurement. If your specification calls out "ASTM C533 Type II" but you actually need a high-density structural grade for molten metal contact or load-bearing fire encasement, the C533 reference is technically incorrect for your application, and a knowledgeable supplier should flag the mismatch rather than ship the wrong product.



## Key Specification Values to Check


When you receive a test report claiming ASTM C533 compliance, these are the values that must be present and the test methods used to measure them.


Density (max): 15 lb/ft³ (240 kg/m³), measured per ASTM C302.

Flexural strength (min): 50 psi (345 kPa), measured per ASTM C203.

Compressive strength (min, at 5% deformation): 100 psi (690 kPa), measured per ASTM C165.

Linear shrinkage at max service temperature (max): 2.0%, measured per ASTM C356.

Surface burning (flame spread / smoke): 0 / 0, measured per ASTM E84.

Hot surface performance: per ASTM C411.

Combustibility: non-combustible, measured per ASTM E136.


For thermal conductivity (k-value), Type II caps the maximum k-value at each mean temperature. As a reference, the ceiling values are roughly 0.059 W/m·K at 100°F (38°C), 0.081 W/m·K at 400°F (204°C), 0.140 W/m·K at 1000°F (538°C), and 0.206 W/m·K at 1500°F (816°C). Lower k-values indicate better insulation performance, and a quality manufacturer will report values below these ceilings. ## How to Verify a Supplier's ASTM C533 Compliance Claim


This is where many buyers get burned. A generic ISO 9001 certificate is NOT evidence of ASTM C533 compliance. To genuinely verify a claim, request the following.


First, a third-party test report from an accredited lab such as SGS, Bureau Veritas, TÜV, or Intertek. The report must explicitly name the ASTM test methods used, including C302, C203, C165, C356, E84, C411, and E136.


Second, confirm the test report is dated within the last 12 months, and that the sample identifier matches the exact grade you intend to purchase.


Third, ensure a Certificate of Conformance accompanies each shipment, referencing the specific ASTM C533 Type.


Fourth, request an asbestos-free declaration. Modern ASTM C533 explicitly requires asbestos-free composition, and legacy asbestos-containing products from decades past are not compliant and are illegal to import into most markets.



## ASTM C533 vs EN 14306


For projects spanning both North American and European markets, it is worth knowing that ASTM C533 and EN 14306 are not interchangeable. EN 14306 is the European standard for factory-made calcium silicate insulation products. It covers similar scope but uses different test methods and dimensional units. A material certified to EN 14306 is not automatically C533 compliant, and vice versa.
